PCB handling: a buyer's guide

How to specify conveyors, loaders, buffers, inverters and inspection stations so an SMT line stops waiting on operators.

Want this answered for your part?

PCB handling equipment moves bare and populated boards between process steps — loading, conveying, buffering, turning, inverting and unloading. It is the connective tissue of an SMT line: the machines that decide whether printers, placement and reflow run continuously or wait on an operator.

Find the waiting

Handling equipment does not make a process faster; it stops the process idling. Measure where your line waits before specifying anything.

The most common answer is the front — a placement machine waiting for an operator to load magazines.

Specify the envelope honestly

Board size range including the awkward outliers, not the typical case.

Thickness range, weight, and whether boards are panelised.

Pass line height must match the equipment either side, which is the most common integration mistake.

Buffering and mixed flow

A buffer between two processes with different cycle times recovers throughput that is otherwise lost to blocking.

Inverters, turners and shuttles exist because line geometry rarely matches process order.

Questions

Commonly asked

What board sizes can you handle?

Standard machines cover the common SMT envelope with motorised width adjustment on most models. Oversized, heavy or unusually thin boards are a configuration question — tell us the dimensions and we will confirm before you order.

Will it integrate with our existing line?

SMEMA handshaking is standard, so the machines work alongside other manufacturers' equipment. Pass line height and board envelope are the two things to confirm.
